What is Fashion?

Fashion is a way of expressing oneself through what you wear. People look to celebrities, magazines, and newspapers to see what is popular in clothing. The styles of clothing can change quickly. Fashion is also influenced by music, art, and politics. Fashion can also be a status symbol or a way to show solidarity with other groups of people. For example, a boy with green hair and multiple piercings might wear a certain style to show that he is part of a group called goths. The other kids might think that he is a rebellious outsider, but within the group, the style will be accepted.

Different words for fashion include mode, vogue, and fad. Mode describes a custom, manner of dress or behavior that is fashionable at a particular time and place. Vogue and fad suggest a temporary popularity.

Clothes that are considered fashionable can be worn for many seasons. When a season ends, the clothes may still be in stores but will be considered out of fashion. The clothes that are considered in fashion can then be recycled or redesigned for another season.

The fashion industry is a powerful force that influences both the choices of designers and consumers. A shift in fashion can reflect a change in culture, but it can also be initiated by business people to promote new products and encourage materialistic consumerism. Regardless of its origin, the trend toward more and more clothing is often seen as a negative development in society.
